  Breeder's Description - 'Black Widow'
A most infamous strain that since 1994 has won a number of awards, including the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1995, and has acquired acclaim from most corners of the globe - rightly so. It has a pedigree of parentage that combines a Brazilian Sativa with a South Indian hybrid. Basically, it is White Widow changing its colours like its company. It will seem evident to the cultivator that this species needs slightly more attention to achieve the expected results. Do not forget the necessary love and attention in order to get the best results. For indoor methods the grower will find that 10 weeks o ...continued

The seeds were bought at my local friendly headshop and my girlfriend and I were heading off to the local garden center to pick up some vegetable seeds for my allotment. The sheer thought of actually going and purchasing myself some black widow seeds, for such a price, surely they will be the best plant ever I thought ...and I wasn't far off.

I've been growing Black Widow for about 4 runs now, maybe more, maybe less. Looking back at my first grow of this strain, compared with my recent one I am learning more and more everytime.

She's a delicate plant, but thrives when you give her what she wants.

You see, the trick with Black Widow, is the ability to control the nutrients she's getting to the drop. Don't get me wrong, she'll grow in anything you give her, just battle her way in her usual self, but once you start reading into her signs, noticing any abnormalities at all and finding out what they are, she's the best. Give her the nutrients she personally demands and she'll repay.

When I first popped the seeds I decided to do my first grow in soil. So all 15 seeds were planted after sucesfully germinating all of them between some paper towels.

About the paper towels, I simply got a sheet of kitchen paper, folded it up to shrink it down size a bit and thicken it up, placed the seeds inside, gave it a spray with a mister of just tap water, and left in dark cuboard under sink for a few days, checking the paper towels to make sure they were moist, not wet or soaking. All of them developed white tap roots.

The soil was put into some medium size pots with plenty of perlite, loads of perlite I mean, and loads of clay pebbles for aeration, and later the same into 5 gallon buckets. After having suffered the prices of 'chem bud' in the past, (ie but that tastes like shit and burns black cuz full or nutes) this time I fed just water, all the way through the grow.

As soon as the seedlings were above the soil, they were under 1000w of HPS Son-T-plus (or gro? I forgot which one it is). I'm not too bothered about the seedlings getting intense light from instant or the heat, the hardy one's'll make it, but I think this could be how I ended up with a poor female ratio.

Anyways all plants were completly varied in veg, after 2 weeks I tied the plants over, I mean I got the top of the plant, tied it to the bottom of the plant, and then put them into flower. This was to stop them from getting too high as I had no idea about how much they'd stretch and thought better be safe than sorry.

After 2weeks I weeded out the males and was left with 4 females I think. Still feeding them pure water, all was still good with the plants, the soil seemed to support them fine on its own.

3 of the plants at this time of around 5 weeks of flowering seemed to be developing similar bud structure, leaf appearance bud size.

The one remaining plant, was so Sativa it could of never finished in the end, I just pulled it after about 15 weeks but never bothered to sample it as the crystal production looked non-existant (plant on picture Dscn2152.jpg). The plant also developed 4 new shoots at every node, which I thought would have bought more bud, but it just seemed to be its downfall, I could probably grow it better if I could control the nutrient level more accuratly, but I threw the plant after this grow.

The 3 remaining plants went on to finish after at about 10 weeks, all the time those final weeks the plant really does pack on extra weight and beef and solidify up to some excellent buds.

Smoke after cure is shit, but then again, I'd say every smoke without cure is shit.

After 40+ days cure, the bud is good. Very Hindu spicy Asia smell, reminds me of Arabia or something similar. The taste is just like the smell and it tastes delicious; you really do crave more for the smoke.

You smoke the spliff, you feel it about half way down the spliff and by the time you finish the spliff, you think you're fucked, then it really hits you, strong, like wobbling in your body, very fast.

I found myself able to do unthinkable amounts of physical exercise, swimming further than I've ever swimmed and running for longer than I've ever run when doing exercise after smoking.

A bong full will send you buzzing around your growroom in a state of complete paranoia, hearing police sirens everytime you walk into your growroom, but not when you step out, excellent but you shit your pants alright.
