  Breeder's Description - 'Kahuna'
One of Soma's favorite strains, Kahuna is a 4-way cross that brings together a wide set of influences for a complex high. Soma recently renamed his Soma #9 strain Kahuna, which is a Hawaiian title for a religious or spiritual leader that literally means "Keeper of the Secret." The Kahuna variety has both tropical influences in its parentage, and spiritually attuning effects when used. A medium-sized plant, Kahuna produces few side branches and a top bud that will impress you with its length and density. Due to the big, tight buds, conditions must be tended carefully for this variety. For indoo ...continued

My Kahuna grow consisted of three hermaphrodites that were apparently the result of an f2 feminized seed experiment. Note that these seeds were donated and created through pollination by an OG member and did not come directly from Soma Seeds.

Oh well, these things happen in our world and as a result I feel it is impossible to accurately and fairly evaluate this strain based on this grow. With that in mind, I will comment on areas that I feel qualified to report upon.

Shared physical traits:
Although all three plants seemed uniform in height, structure, node spacing, etc., they all produced uniquely shaped and colored leaves and buds.

Two phenotypes appeared that looked very different. One had dark orange leaves and purple buds late in flower, and the other had light green leaves with copious red hairs emerging from burnt orange colored calyxes. The finished bud smoked and tasted quite different as well.

The three plants were fairly compact and were easily the smallest plants in the room despite a very vigorous period in veg and all the pampering I could give. For four-foot Indica doms, there were relatively few side branches and the majority of the bud sites were focused around the enormous colas that exceeded 20? in height.

Node spacing averaged 4-6 inches for both phenos. Due to the large colas and limited branches, this strain is a natural for SOG style grows and therefore I would recommend against topping this strain. The plants reached sexual ?confusion? at 4 weeks from seed, and were the first plants to show sexual maturity of the four strains.

During 12/12, they stretched an average of 34?, so plan your flowering photoperiod to start when they are relatively short. I flowered at 11?, 11? and 17? and the plants finished at 44?, 46? and 49?.

This strain did very well in hydro, showing stress only when transplanted into the bubbling buckets. After recovering, they did exceptionally well with no further problems other than nutrient sensitivity.

Germination/Vegetation
Germination was 3 for 3, and I had vigorous taproots within 24 hours using the paper towel method. The seedlings seemed sluggish and I worried about losing a few of them initially, but they picked up steam and eventually caught up and passed the others in maturity.

Of all the strains I grew this time out, the Kahunas were by far the most sensitive towards nutrient over/under feeding. I lowered the nutes twice to prevent further leaf scarring and they seemed happiest at 450 PPM for veg and 600 PPM in flower. Because of this and their sexual orientation, I moved them to their own environment and was able to tailor their nutrients to their specific needs. Keep this in mind if you plan to grow this strain with other less particular strains.

Watch them closely during the seedling stage or you could easily cook their fan leaves.

Highgrade?s Formula was a bit too much for these ladies.

Flowering:
Initially I plucked all of the visible ?appendages?, and was able to prevent mass seeding of the bud. Still, there were several seeds that appeared in all three of the plants. Due to the seeding I will not include the yield, as I assume that it would be much, much higher, especially when considering the size of the enormous colas.

Phenotypes:
There were two phenotypes, both were Indica Dominant and similar in shape and build. One however, was initially much more vigorous and finished with the highest yield.

Pheno #1:
The first pheno was the tallest and turned a very pretty orange color late in flower. The buds were light ? dk. Green, and were very small.

Odor was strong throughout and I enlisted heavy-duty odor containment in the final month of flower. The smell is hard to describe, somewhat spicy, almost pepper-like. Bumping these plants late in flower will shower you with an eye-watering stench that will really bowl you over. Man, what stinky girls they were, not for the meek of heart..

Yield was the best on this pheno, which says little, considering I harvested them about ten days early and they were seeded hermies, to boot.

Color: dark green leaves that turn red and orange late in flower. Moderate standing resin on buds.
Beauty: 10, Very pretty, fall-like leaf coloring late in flower. Buds are dark green with bright red hairs.
Ease of Grow: 7, touchy nutrient wise, best to keep it in a one strain grow (if grown in a shared environment - hydro).
Smell: 9, very stinky. Early on like a wet litter box, later peppery and spicy.
Yield: N/A

Smoke Report:
This is the most unusual tasting and smelling bud I have smoked in a while. From the moment you unscrew the jar, you know this isn?t your run of the mill, typical herb. After smoking nothing but fruity strains for the last year, it was nice to try something different ? a lot different..

The nugs are very attractive and are medium in density. The smell is very chemical with a faint pine/spice smell when smoked. The taste is fantastic! The smoke is very smooth, almost like a Sativa. The sweet peppery taste is very unique and pleasing. The after taste is unusual as well and will lead you to find some liquid refreshment in a hurry. Cottonmouth city, this one..

Totally cerebral, superhero high with a motivating and inquisitive buzz that will keep you thinking out of the box ? for about 4 hours!

Potency: 8, good for daytime activities.
Taste: 8, very unique and a good change of pace.
High: 8, excellent daytime or wake-n-bake buzz.
Desirability: 8, A great MJ strain, period.
Social Liability: 0, no physical impairment.
Paranoia: 0, none.
Friend Maker: 8, Very fun weed that encourages depth of thought.

Pheno #2:
This particular plant had light green leaves and reddish-purple buds. The buds were immature on this pheno, more so than the previous, so any comments here are superficial in nature.

Although there was a seemingly endless amount of bud sites on this plant, in the end it yielded the least, due to seeding and immaturity. Because of this, I am unable to predict what a realistic yield would have been from a ?straight? female.

The buds were very pretty with dark purple and red hues throughout. I wish I?d seen them at full maturity, as I?m sure they would be breathtaking. The buds had lots of visible trichomes and they were very sticky as a result.

Color: medium green with dark red and purple calyxes.
Beauty: 10, flowers start out pink and gradually turn dark red, curing to purple.
Ease of Grow: 7, as above, don?t over do it on the nutrients.
Smell: 9, stinky, stinky and stinky.
Yield: N/A.

Smoke Report:
Very airy buds that burn up quickly to a fine white ash. Smell is like incense, very sweet and enjoyable. Not for public consumption, however..

A delicious tasting herb that really doesn?t remind me of anything in particular, but there is a definite tropical influence added to an overpowering earthy/spice flavor that will keep you smiling.

The high hits fast and is much more mentally taxing than the previous smoke. Not really distracting, but it tends to make you scramble to achieve basic solutions to even the least complex of problems. Not a good choice before competing on Jeopardy, or calculating a tip for that matter..

Potency: 7, keeps me from getting much accomplished..
Taste: 8, interesting, yet strangely familiar.
High: 8, 2 hours of mostly harmless confusion.
Desirability: 8, Not too bad at all.
Social Liability: 5, a pounding high with medium to high mental impairment.
Paranoia: 0, none.
Friend Maker: 8, Fun, yet confusing and time wasting. Energy vacuum.

Summary:
I was very disappointed with the hermie outcome and honestly feel like I need to do another grow to get a good look at this strain. I was impressed with the uniformity and consistency. All of the plants looked identical until the last month of 12/12. The coloring on both phenos was very attractive and the finished bud smokes great and looks very appealing.

I am sure Kahuna will become a favorite of whoever grows it. The unique appearance, smell and flavor combine to make a very high quality bud that offers a good smoke in a small to medium sized Indica.

The plants were harvested at 56 days, which was approximately 10 days early, in my opinion Figure on 63 ? 68 days for maturity.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a unique change from the fruity type strains that seem to dominate these days, this is a good choice.
